Improv Everywhere is a New York City based group that stages public scenes of chaos and joy. For the past three years they have organized an annual event called “Black Tie Beach” where hundreds of participants spend a day at the beach in black tie attire. While out with friends this past weekend I decided to plan a similar event in Austin.
One of the primary attractions of Austin’s Zilker Park is the spring-fed, three-acre Barton Springs Pool. Its water is a crisp 68 degrees and on summer weekends the pool is packed with swimmers.
Twelve hours ago I created a public Facebook event titled “Barton Springs Formalwear Swim!” and invited just about everyone I know in Austin. As of now 30 people have replied “yes” and another 28 have replied “maybe”. While turnout for Facebook events is never close to 100% I am pretty sure that this is going to go off with a bang.
The formalwear swim meshes perfectly with Simplifying Saturdays, as I have an ill-fitting suit and some dress shirts in my giveaway pile. I will be wearing the suit and a white button-down as I jump into the pool at 1:15pm this Sunday!
Two photographers have volunteered to take still shots and another has volunteered to take video so you can expect a complete report next week. Over and out.
