It struck me a couple of days ago that this time next month I will be in my 4Runner at the beginning of a two-week, 2,000 mile adventure from Austin to Black Rock City, the home of Burning Man.
Oh, right. I bought a car. There’s a lot to catch up on from the Our Take On Freedom days! During my years traveling by RV I bemoaned our inability to explore rougher roads and I expect my lightly modified 4WD 4Runner to handily drive through streams, over rocks and through sand. I’ll be putting it through its paces during this road trip and its first real test will come on the White Rim Road in Canyonlands National Park.
Despite knowing that most people heading out to Burning Man haul ass over a few days it’s incredibly weird for me to consider driving 2,000 miles in just two weeks. I’ll be practically flying across the country!
My meandering route will take me through some of the most beautiful parts of the United States. I will be visiting and revisiting southwestern Colorado and Utah’s canyon country, spending as much time as I can at higher elevations where the heat will be more forgiving than it is in Austin. I plan to do plenty of hiking, climbing, swimming, juggling and stargazing along the way.
I will be visiting Las Vegas for the first time, although just for one day, and will be tent camping most nights. All in all a very different experience from RVing.
Here’s to new adventures!
