For the vast majority of my adult life I did not dance. On the incredibly rare occasions that I voluntarily moved to music I clomped around and didn’t enjoy myself. That radically changed about two years ago. It’s hard to pinpoint what led to the shift but Burning Man probably had something to do with it.
Now I dance all the time, moved by all types of music and unencumbered by thoughts of how I might look. Dance for me is relaxing, energizing, flowing, meditative, and ecstatic. I really enjoy dancing to electronic music at dance clubs but I don’t drink much. That makes me a pretty bad customer. My usual haunts charge no cover and I honestly think that I have never bought a drink while out dancing. Sorry, Lanai.
But I like to dance in places where lots of other people are dancing and – surprisingly – dance clubs aren’t always that place. I feed off of group energy and plenty of people at clubs are there only to drink and socialize. There’s nothing wrong with drinking and socializing but those are not my goals in going out dancing.
This past Sunday I joined about 100 people at Ecstatic Dance Austin and I had a spectacular time. They play a wide variety of music and people express themselves through free and fun movement. The environment is smoke and alcohol free and there is no talking on the dance floor. Everyone is there to dance, sweat and have fun.
I’m pretty sure that I found my dance home.
