I was out dancing with friends a couple of weeks ago and one of them – who I have always thought had boundless energy – said something to me along the lines of “You have so much energy!” I was at first dumbstruck but after thinking for a few seconds about her comment I realized what had happened: dance synergy!
The people who I had been out dancing with were all hardcore dancers. I like their variety of dancing styles, their disinhibition, and their willingness to give everything they’ve got to movement. When I’m out dancing I mostly jive around by myself but when I’m out with people I know it can be fun to share a dance or two. There’s something important to know, however: “sharing a dance” with these people means shaking everything you’ve got, sweating, and having a great time flowing to the rhythm together. Half-effort is not acceptable.
In my rough estimation, here’s how dance synergy works:
In my mind: Damn, that’s some seriously high energy. I need to step up my game!
In my friend’s mind: Shit, he’s dancing even harder. Time to kick that ATP synthesis into overdrive!
Back to my mind: This is getting real. Okay, I’ll turn it up to 11 for a few minutes!
That continues until we drop dead. Dance synergy is where it’s at. It’s what happens right before the super energy reserves you didn’t know you had make their appearance. It’s when people stop what they’re doing to stare at your craziness. I hope to always make people step up their game and to bring mine to the floor every time.
