I have the Merlin Bird ID app on my iphone. Despite its finickiness in areas of poor connectivity the app has been joyfully helpful in identifying birds we have seen. Last night I had the pleasure of seeing and conversing with a pair of yellow warblers, thanks to Merlin’s bird sounds. The warblers were flitting around the bushes by our campfire and I played a recording of a warbler call on my phone. Every time I played a call the birds would start flying in circles around us, getting closer and more curious. Things were probably helped by the fact that my phone case is warbler yellow.
On the theme of “nature around our campsite” we also gave Catty a literal taste of Utah, allowing him to explore (and munch on) the grass underneath a nearby cottonwood tree. He approves.
